We all know that, in almost any circumstance, motivation can go a long way in helping to ensure a youngster’s cooperation and positive attitude.

In orthodontics, it is especially important that we have the patient’s full cooperation and compliance while in treatment to achieve the best possible result. This cooperation often involves wearing special appliances such as headgear, elastics or retainers, as well as practicing good oral hygiene.

To encourage the necessary patient compliance, we utilize a very effective motivational system that gets our patients involved in their treatment. We call our system the ORTHOBUCKS award program, where they can earn great prizes by collecting ORTHOBUCKS for good appliance wear, clean teeth and keeping appointments.

In addition, we run a fish bowl contest with quarterly drawings. The only eligibility requirement is that the patient bring their appointment card with them when they come to their appointment. We also run seasonal contests such as our postcard contest during the summer, Mother’s Day contest and Thanksgiving turkey raffle.

We have put a great deal of time and expense into our motivational program. The results make it well worth the effort. We have had such a positive response that we find that our patients not only comply with our instructions to earn the ORTHOBUCKS, but they seem to enjoy and to understand their orthodontic experience more.
